Name, age, and where you’re from.
My name is Alisa. I am 15 years old and I am from Knoxville, Tennessee.
What age were you when you won the contest?
I won the “Draw Something Good” contest in 2019 when I was 13.
Can you tell us about your winning design? How did you come up with it or what inspired it?
My winning design was a monocle-wearing T-rex dinosaur drinking Tea. This was a funny little drawing that I thought would work well on a T-shirt. I love making people laugh and smile, so I jumped at the opportunity to put a silly joke on a T-shirt.
How was your experience winning the design contest? How did it feel to see your design on a t-shirt?
I had a wonderful experience with this competition! Being 13 years old, seeing my own drawing on a T-shirt was surreal because I thought that art done by someone that age usually ends up on the fridge. However, seeing it on a national website, and branded with a company that I love was absolutely incredible!
How do you get inspired to create something new?
For me, inspiration can strike from a wide variety of places, whether it is from other creators, novels, movies, TV shows, my environment, or just my own brain, I always have some idea floating around. Whenever I see something that inspires me, I always am itching for art supplies.
What process, materials, techniques, etc., do you use to create your artwork these days?
I use all kinds of different mediums when it comes to art, including pencil, paint, chalk, markers, watercolor, ink, colored pencil, and clay. I’m always trying to find new mediums to work with, I love to experiment with things, and make beautiful art!
How have you gotten creative in the past year? Did you find it easier (or harder) to create during everything going on?
2020 was a rough year, and though quarantine was rough, I actually believe it helped me improve my art. Instead of just sitting around at home, I was always painting, or drawing, you would rarely find me without a pencil in my hand. I would spend hours at home listening to music, just drawing to my heart’s content. This allowed me to escape the crazy world outside for a while, and it honestly improved my creative thought process, and I believe overall, improved my artwork as a whole.
What advice can you give someone who might be going through a hard time?
If you are going through a rough time, don’t think about the fact that you can’t do it, or that you can’t make it, instead think about the fact that you are going to make it. There is going to be a light at the end of the tunnel when you look for it, you just have to continue to push through and persevere until you make it, and know that you are incredibly strong and enduring. Whoever you are, you are going to end up ok; everything will be alright in the end. Try doing what makes you happy, and talk to people that you love and trust.
What advice to do you have for participating in the Life is Good T-Shirt Design contest this year
If you are participating, just produce art from the heart! Don’t try and make something that you think others will like, just create something that makes you happy, and that you are proud of. That thought process itself will help you produce better artwork.
What do you love to do in addition to being an artist?
Being an artist is really fun. You get to express yourself through your work, in whatever medium it is, and make others happy in the process. In addition to helping express emotions I think working your artistic side and getting creative can make you a better person overall, it helps you think outside the box, and see the world with just a little more color!
Fill in the blank “Life is Good because…”
Life is Good because of people you meet and things you do along the way. :)
