TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CONNECTION TO OPTIMISM.

Hello, we are Shelby and Sandy. We are brothers who paint together in Los Angeles. We try to stay optimistic every day because life is too short to worry. Our motto is “Shelby and Sandy are nice,” and we strive to live by these words every day by being nice to others and making nice artwork.

HOW IS THIS REFLECTED IN THE DESIGN YOU CREATED FOR US?

Optimism is reflected in our design through bright and happy colors. Clouds are one of our favorite and most iconic symbols, and we wanted to make them brightly colored and fun.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START CREATING ART? WHAT WAS THE CATALYST?

We’ve been creating art our whole lives but started to work together professionally about 6 years ago. We began working together when Sandy moved to Los Angeles to attend USC. Shelby had already graduated from USC and was working in LA for a TV show. Because we lived so close, we were able to work together almost every day, which organically created “Shelby and Sandy.”

DO YOU USE ART TO WORK THROUGH CHALLENGES AND/OR SETBACKS? HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

We use art for everything! We don’t really believe in setbacks, and challenges are just part of the fun.

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR UNIQUE PERSONAL STYLE?

We have always had similar styles. Growing up in the same house, listening to the same music, watching the same cartoons and movies gave us the same interests which then translated into us having the same artistic style. We use this overlapping database to work together seamlessly.

WHAT FEELING DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO HAVE WHEN THEY EXPERIENCE YOUR ART?

When people view our art, we want them to feel nostalgic and happy.

DO YOU EVER GET “ARTIST’S BLOCK”? HOW DO YOU REDISCOVER YOUR CREATIVITY WHEN YOU’RE FEELING STUCK?

There are always so many projects that we are working and so many more we hope to work on that there is really no time for artist’s block. Also, variation in our artwork keeps the creativity and energy high. We love creating so many different types of things—paintings, furniture, videos, photography, animation, etc.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR WORK, OR THE WORLD AROUND YOU IN 2020?

We learned that everything is going to be okay. The entire world changed, but as long as you work hard, act smart, and be kind to others (and to yourself!), then things will be okay.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO START THEIR OWN CAREER AS AN ARTIST?

The best advice we like to give someone looking to start their own career as an artist is don’t do it alone. The best part about painting each day is that we get to do it together. We always have someone to bounce ideas off of. We would suggest working with someone else that has a similar vision to yours.

TELL US ABOUT SOMETHING THAT’S INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW.

What is inspiring us right now is Shelby’s new baby boy, Valentine. Shelby is a dad, and Sandy is an uncle, and it is awesome. To see a small bean grow up and develop his own personality and learn something new each day is truly amazing. We can’t wait to paint with him soon!
