Tiny Acts of Optimism to Do Right Now

By: Stefanie Schefter

In case you haven’t heard, March was Optimism Month. We celebrated with tips, tricks, and positive vibes a-plenty. To help keep the good vibes going strong for the rest of the year, we compiled a list of attainable ways for you to access optimism right now. Accessing an optimistic mindset isn’t always easy, so these tiny acts of optimism are just that—tiny. We hope that starting small empowers you to try ‘em all, and figure out what works for you.

  • Light a candle while you work. Hello, cozy vibes.
  • Text a friend you miss. Virtual social contact still counts for something!
  • Write down 5 wins you’ve had this week. You’re doing better than you think.
  • Go for a 5-minute walk outside. Odds are, you’ll keep cruising after those 5 minutes are up, as the movement, sunshine, and fresh air are guaranteed mood boosts.
  • Take in your surroundings—what can you see, hear, smell, and touch? This is a helpful grounding exercise that takes you out of your mind, away from your screens, and into your body.
  • Play some uplifting or relaxing music to set the vibe for your space. Music can have a powerful positive effect on our mindset.
  • Make a fancy homemade coffee, mocktail, or cocktail with whatever fun ingredients you have on hand. (Think: vanilla extract, cinnamon, citrus juices. Probably not all together, but maybe?)
  • Do some easy stretches or yoga poses, like child’s pose, legs up the wall, or downward dog. Moving your body, focusing on the breath, and changing your physical position can help you see things from a new perspective (literally).

  • Drink a glass of water (or two). You’re probably dehydrated.
  • Put away 5 pieces of clutter you see in your immediate surroundings. This mini clean-up will boost your dopamine and refresh your space. A refreshed space = a calm mind.
  • Snuggle your pet. Doctors recommend at least one snuggle break per hour on a regular working day ;).
  • Take a bath or shower. This is an easy, effective way to give yourself a reset if you’re feeling blah.
  • Take a virtual vacay. Go on YouTube and search “ambiance” and you will find hundreds of beautifully animated scenes of tropical beaches, Parisian cafes, NYC lofts, sunny summer picnics, and more. It’s a great way to set the mood for your space while you work, clean, or relax.
  • Make a dinner reservation or plan a movie night for the upcoming weekend. Having something (even something small) to look forward to will make your whole week better.
  • Open a window and let in some outside air. Hearing the birds, traffic sounds, and people passing by will help you feel connected to the world around you.
  • Wash your sheets. Future you will be so grateful for warm, clean sheets come bedtime.
  • Doodle, cut up some magazines for a collage, or break out those paints and brushes! Making art can be a meditative experience that helps you process emotions and connect to your creativity.
  • Muster up the courage to do something you’ve been putting off for a while. A little inspo—make a dentist’s or doctor’s appointment you’re due for, get your car inspected, or clean out your fridge. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment, and you’ll get rid of that nagging feeling that’s been haunting you.
  • Journal for 5 minutes and take note of what comes up. This can be a powerful tool for accessing your subconscious and seeing what’s happening inside your head.
  • Make a delicious, over-the-top snack that satisfies your craving of the moment.
  • Clear out your inbox—delete some emails and unsubscribe from 5 companies whose content doesn’t add anything to your life.
  • If all else fails, watch puppy videos.
